LEAD…FOLLOW…OR GET OUT THE WAY! What does this expression say to you? Do you know where you fit in this statement? Are you a leader? Do you often find yourself on the cutting edge of information or the first to do something or the person not afraid to take a chance or a risk? Do you have what it takes to rally the troops when necessary and get the job done?
The old expression many are called but few are chosen is true about a leader. Leadership is a process for guiding individuals, groups, and entire organizations in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals (Shockley-Zalabak, 2009: Fundamentals of Organization Communication) . Leadership takes place through communication.
FOLLOWERS – are people that usually don’t take risks. They live a comfortable life on the sides waiting for someone else to tell them what to do. There is little to no responsibility for them because they hardly ever make any decisions. Communication skills are not important because they tend to do more listening than talking. Some of them live long uneventful lives in the shadows. Never too far to the left; Never too far to the right; Just somewhere in the middle. Followers can be found anywhere, at any time in any group, family or organization. Followers are needed and necessary. Who would the leaders have to lead if there were no followers? It’s like a baseball game, in which everyone plays their position. We all can’t be the pitcher, back catcher or 3rd basemen. Somebody has to be in left field, just like someone has to be in the right field.
The last phrase GET OUT OF THE WAY is pretty self explanatory. If you are not leading and you ‘re not following then you are IN the way and you should get out of the way and let other people do their job. Think of it like this, have you ever been on the road and somebody is driving 10 miles an hour for absolutely no reason. The car is not broken, the driver is not impaired, the weather is fine. Yet, they continue driving at a snail’s pace just because they can. Well in life and on the road I say…GET OUT OF THE WAY!! Don’t be that person because those people get left behind.
There is a company that continues to grow and lead the industry in technology and innovation and that company is ComF5. If you don't know about it, then it's time you learn. Watch the video.
It is 2011 and the world has changed. The economy has been in a recession for the past 3 years with little to no improving. More people are finding out that their 9 to 5 job they thought they could retire in, is no longer enough. Car manufactures are shutting down, newspaper subscriptions are at an all time low and the banking and real estate industry has become less than desirable.
Technology has gone digital, the classifieds have been replaced by Career Builder, Craigslist and Monster.com. The internet has become the new TV and movies are all in 3- D. Your job changes, people change, your home changes and so does your finances. There is so much going on in our lives and our communities that we need to learn how to deal with all the changes around us. Change is not easy, but necessary when the time comes.
Who Moved My Cheese? (1988), Spencer Johnson, MD, is a simple parable that reveals profound truths about change. It is an amusing and enlightening story of four characters who live in a "Maze" and look for "Cheese" to nourish them and make them happy.
"Cheese" is a metaphor for what you want to have in life - whether it is a good job, a loving relationship, money, a possession, health, or spiritual peace of mind. The "Maze" is where you look for what you want - the organization you work in, or the family or community you live in. A must read for everyone.
