9 -Reasons Why your Social Media Strategy Isn't Working

1. Your social channels are overly self-promotional
If you’re only sharing self-promotional content on your social media profiles, people aren’t going to want to follow you. People will want to follow you because they think your updates are interesting. “Interesting” doesn’t just includes your latest product releases or discount offerings. They include breaking industry news, insightful or instructional blog posts, humorous videos, etc. You have the opportunity to create this type of content by having a company blog, and you should also share content that others publish to show that you’re a participant in a bigger community.2. A Personality Hasn’t Been Developed for your Social Channels
How often do you follow someone on Twitter whose profile avatar doesn’t include an image of a person? I’d bet not often. Social media sites are just that: social! People want to connect with other people, not just brand logos and stuffy corporate updates. But if you create a voice that people can identify with, and even select someone like a CEO or Marketing Director/Specialist/Guru to be the representative of your brand, people will be more likely to pay attention to you. Remember: people want to connect with other people.3. A Two-way Conversation with Your Audience isn’t Taking Place
In addition to sharing interesting content, you should also make sure to interact with others in social media. This can include replying or retweeting people on Twitter, commenting on a post someone writes on your Facebook wall, or answering a question in LinkedIn Answers. People want to be heard, and you can make potential customers happy by showing that you’re listening.4. You’re Using the Wrong Social Media Sites
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr, SlideShare, Vimeo, Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Delicious… seems pretty overwhelming, right? The truth is, you don’t need to have a presence on every social media site out there. Focus on the sites that are more relevant to your business. If you’re a tech B2B company, perhaps focus your efforts on LinkedIn, Twitter, and SlideShare. If you’re a consumer B2C company, you may find Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube a better fit. Or try all of them for a couple months, and only continue using the sites that bring in the most traffic/leads.5. Your Website Doesn’t Promote Your Social Channels
You can set up your social channels, publish a few updates, and cross your fingers and hope to get found, but you’ll probably get very few followers that way. You website is a great place to start promoting your social channels because visitors to your website are likely already interested in what you have to offer, and would be more inclined to follow your social media presence. The viral nature of these sites will allow their friends to see their interactions with your company, potentially leading to even more followers.6. Your Social Media Profiles Don’t Have Enough Fresh Content
Social media doesn’t have to be a time consuming endeavor, but you should make sure that you have fresh content on your site to hold people’s attention. Use HubSpot’s social media monitoring tools or a service like Google Alerts to keep tabs on relevant social media conversations. This way when you’re having your morning coffee, you can scan your feed of conversations and interact with 2-3 posts. This way, even if you didn’t have time to create a new blog post, or post a new video to YouTube, you’ve at least contributed something valuable to your social media profiles for that day.7. You’re Outsourcing Your Content Creation to Non-Experts
Many businesses hire agencies to create content for their social media profiles in hopes of freeing up the bandwidth of their own employees. But no matter how much you train your agency, they will never be as much an expert as you are. They don’t have the insight you get just from walking the halls of your office or talking to coworkers. And their brains are probably filled with the dozens of other companies they also have to write content for. Remember; social media doesn’t have to be all that time consuming, and the content you choose to create and share will be more valuable than what they rush to put together. YOU and your employees are the experts, and YOU know what your audience is interested in.8. You’re Expecting Immediate Results and Therefore Giving Up
Like search engine optimization, social media promotion takes time to yield awesome results. Persistence and remarkable content is key. If you build it, they will come. Just give it time, keep pushing out fresh content, and keep interacting with your audience. Don’t let your social media presence fizzle out because you feel discouraged.9. You’re not Having Fun
If you’re reading this to get tips for your own social media strategy, let me remind you that part of your job involves using sites like Facebook and Twitter every day. Let me rephrase: you’re getting paid to use Facebook. You get to leave the walls of your cubicle (in a figurative sense) and interact with real people out there, many of which have a problem that your product or service can solve. WHY SOCIAL MEDIA?
In the past 18 months, social media has evolved. Once just a way for individuals to
connect and share with one another, social media has developed into a promising
business tool. This transition, which has been fast and furious, has been closely
followed by SmartBrief Inc. through its publication SmartBrief on Social Media
since November 2008.
To date, the media have focused on getting started with social media, using it for
marketing and sharing bellwether stories. However, very little has been written
on how most businesses of all shapes and sizes are using and leveraging social
media today.
About the survey
SmartBrief and its research partner Summus, Limited decided to tackle these
questions and more through an online survey of SmartBrief readers across a variety
of industries. The survey was designed to benchmark and measure the state of
social-media usage among business people in June 2010. SmartBrief and Summus
will track the results of this benchmark on an annual or semi-annual basis,
focusing on the following questions:
1. Who is using social media for business?
2. What social-media tools and channels are being used?
3. What goals are being pursued?
4. What tactics are being deployed?
5. What obstacles are standing in the way of adoption?
6. Has social media delivered measurable results for companies?
7. How are companies staffing social media and allocating resources?
8. How do companies assess their own social-media strategies?
10,641 individuals began the survey and 6,494 completed the survey. This 59.9%
completion rate, which is high for a survey of this length and depth, indicates a
high level of interest in the topic. The data is very reliable, with a .012 standard
error at a 95% confidence interval and a standard deviation of 1.195.
About the respondents: SmartBrief’s readership is made up of over 3.5 million
subscribers from a large and diverse cross-section of industries. Individual
business people with all levels of experience and responsibility are represented
in the survey. The survey respondents primarily work at U.S. companies (92%) and
represent a full range of business sizes – from fewer than 10 employees to more than 50,000.

Looking for Leaders
There are people in this world that have a clear vision and direction as to who they are and what they want to accomplish in life. Then, there are those that are not necessarily looking for a leadership role but who are good at it and find themselves in this position. Some of us need to be coached and some of us are able to do the coaching. Wherever you are on the food chain it is important to know where you are and what your role is. Not everyone is meant to be a Leader. Some of us are meant to Follow.
I say this because I am looking for people who want to do more with their Time, Effort and Energy. Who would like to maximize their income by leveraging their effort. Leadership takes place through communication. Leadership is the process for guiding individuals, groups, and entire organizations in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals. (Shockley-Zalabak, 2009: Fundamentals of Organizational Communication). Do you fit the profile?
Let's move ahead to the part where we all ask ourselves these questions:
Is where you are in life what you envisioned for yourself 5 years ago? 10 years ago?
How about money? Are you making enough or are you stuck in a J-O-B - Just Over Broke?
From experience I can tell you that unless your last name is Hilton, Trump, Winfrey or Woods, you need more money. The thing about having more money is wanting more money. Let me say it again, in order to get more we have to WANT MORE!! Then after we see the need for it we have to change our mindset to get more money. By this I mean there has to be a change in what we do on a DAILY BASIS that moves us in the direction to have more money. The very definition of INSANITY is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
So Let me ask you a question:
Are you doing the same thing over and over? How do you expect to get any further in life if you are doing the same thing that you did 5 years ago, 10 years ago? There is a reason why you have not gotten any results. Before I get too deep on you I want to back the train up and ask you if you see the need to make some changes in your life? Do you see a clear picture of what you have done in the past that as lead you to where you are TODAY? I am hoping you are nodding your head and answering YES, because if you are there is HOPE for you and things can and will change if you ALLOW them to.
Now! how can you get started on this path this mindset shift that will help you to focus on the positive and on wealth building? Well, I could tell you there are books that I have read and continue to read that will open your eyes. I could also tell you that there is a magic blue pill you can take that will unplug you from the Matrix. The question is... would you read the book? Would you take the pill? Action is the key to any plan. We have to be ready for the next steps which requires us to do something.
I am a huge T.Harv Eker fan and he is a brilliant author that I suggest would help you. You could start with Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, (2005),T. Harv Eker, then move on through his body of work. Then there is Think and Grow Rich, (2005), Napoleon Hill (This book has been revised a few times and it just gets better and better). Taming Your Gremlin (R), (2003): A Surprisingly Simple Method for Getting Out of Your Own Way, Rick Carson. There are many, many more but I will stop there. Trust me once you get through these you will want to keep reading.

What is System Optimizer?
So I received an email a while ago about some software that might be able to help your computer work better. System Optimizer claims to clean your system registry, junk files, eliminate duplicate files, defragment and a few other computer related system clean-up type stuff. Well It took a while but I downloaded it and I'm waiting to see how it helps my computer. Do me a favor and check it out. Here is some information and a link for everyone that wants to try it.

Wall Street - Money Never Sleeps
Today I watched Wall Street - Money Never Sleeps. This is a great movie, go see it. There is a pre-quel to this movie also with Michael Douglas that goes explain his character more. Go out and get it then watch the new movie. It is an eye opening experience for those of us who are learning about the stock market and how to make money. Definitely give it 4 Stars. ****

Why Should you Market Your Business?

Marketing is the process by which companies create customer interest in products or services. Marketing is used to identify the customer, to keep the customer, and to satisfy the customer. With the customer as the focus of its activities, it can be concluded that marketing management is one of the major components of business management. Marketing evolved to meet the stasis in developing new markets caused by mature markets and overcapacities in the last 2-3 centuries.[citation needed] The adoption of marketing strategies requires businesses to shift their focus from production to the perceived needs and wants of their customers as the means of staying profitable.[citation needed]
The term marketing concept holds that achieving organizational goals depends on knowing the needs and wants of target markets and delivering the desired satisfactions.[2] It proposes that in order to satisfy its organizational objectives, an organization should anticipate the needs and wants of consumers and satisfy these more effectively than competitors.[2]

So if you are in business and not actively getting your word out about what you do, how you do it and how you can help others to benefit, then you are not actively marketing. One of the things Wikipedia does not cover is having passion. If you have passion you can use it to grow and motivate people.
A very wise person once told me that When your WHY gets bigger the HOW gets easier. This means that if you wake up and can't wait to talk to people and share your knowledge, information, goals etc., then you are passionate and you know WHY you do what you do. The HOW is easy because its second nature.

What is your current Marketing Strategy?
We all have had parties we have hosted and invitations sent. There are those that respond quickly with an RSVP and then there are those that respond late or not at all. Well, sometimes it is the person and sometimes it is the way we are promoting the event or marketing it.
The next time you are marketing for your company or for yourself, keep these things in mind.
Be sure to drop me a line with an update on how you used the above information and if it helped.

- What is the mission or outcome desired? (this can be the number of people attending or amount of sales or number of early RSVP's) The important thing to remember is to have this goal in your mind.
- Analyze past efforts. What worked and what did not? If this is your first time, be sure to get feedback for the next one.
- Determine how you want people to respond. Identify the perfect scenario or outcome. (This can be something like "I sell 100 new items to new customers" or "I add 50 new people to my contact list", or "Everyone that RSVP's actually shows up and has a great time"). This is subjective and is up to you. (At some point between #3 and #4 you should perform a SWOT Analysis, which is Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats. More on this next time).
- Tactical Marketing Programs - The Product, Promotion, Distribution, Pricing. So if you are planning an event or fundraiser, in this section you might think about what people will receive for their donations? What are the sponsorship levels? How am I promoting this event? Is the event (product) something that can be advertised easily or can most of the people I am targeting understand the concept?
- Budgeting Performance, do you have a specific amount that was budgeted for the marketing and promotion of the event or product line or service? Even the best laid plans should have some type of monetary goal or starting point. It will be hard to track your efforts unless you start off knowing how much you have and how much you can spend and how much you want to make in return. The ROI - Return On Investment is a tried and true benchmark for hitting your goals. If you are losing money, then analyze the how and why's. The current path you may be on could be a bad one and if that is the case you want to get out quickly so you don't continue to throw good money after bad.
- Any Additional Considerations - Everyone's marketing plan will be different depending on the outcomes. I suggest you take a look at any other factors that may contribute to your desired outcome. This could be a partner that is frugal, or an event where people have to travel over 50 miles to attend, or anything else.

When was the last time you helped someone?
When was the last time you helped someone or encouraged someone? Did you do it out of compassion or love or was it to get something out of them? Believe it or not, our motives have real life consequences. The reasons for doing something can be just as important as the act itself.
Our words and thoughts have power. It is so easy to show a person a kindness by smiling or by saying hello or how are you? How often have we said to ourselves "that person looks so mean or they could have at least spoke to me"? If you are like most of us it is probably often.
Stop for a second and think about some of the conversations you have had over the past 24 hours. Think about the words said to you and the words you said. Now ask yourself how it made you feel and how do you think you made others feel? In this fast paced life we live in it is easy to get caught up in our day-to-day activities and forget about the people around us. Let's be thankful for the present and try to make a positive difference in someone's life. Once we do this we are also making a positive difference in our own lives.

If everyone knew The Secret, it wouldn't be a secret anymore
The book The Secret came out a few years ago written by Rhonda Byrne. This book possessed answers for the people who were ready to receive them and frustration to those who weren't. I happen to be one of those people who needed to hear exactly what was being said.
In a conversation I had today, I was reminded about some of the basic principles of attraction. By the very strength of our minds we create our destiny. Individuals have the power to attract things to them. Bob Proctor said it best, "Everything that is coming into your life you are attracting into your life. And it's attracted to you by virtue of the images you're holding in your mind. It's what you're thinking. whatever is going on in your mind you are attracting to you." (The Secret, 2006)
Why do you think that 1% of the population earns around 96 percent of all the money that's being earned? Do you think that's an accident? Its designed that way. They understand something. They understand The Secret, and now you must begin to shift your conscious mind and awareness so you can understand it to.
The Secret is just one book that teaches these principles. One of my personal favorites is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Napoleon Hill spoke to many wealthy people who articulated some basic reasons they were wealthy and others were not. Think and Grow Rich covers the Power of Thought, Desire, Faith, Autosuggestion, (Influencing the subconscious mind), Specialized Knowledge, Imagination and much much more. If this book is not in your home or office and you have not read it at least 2 times go get it, read it and continue to refer to it.
I bring up these books because, most of the people I know are in a battle with themselves. They want to go from poverty to wealth but can't seem to do it. Something "Always" gets in the way. We find ourselves circling the same old situations that never seem to improve. Well, here's the key, change your mind and you will improve your situation. Believe that you have the power to alter the course your life is going then take the steps to do it. The kind of changes I am suggesting don't just happen over night, but they do happen. The longest journey starts with a single step. Make today the day we take our first step and continue taking them until there are no more steps to take.
One last food for thought, another book to read is Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth Another one to keep and read over and over. If more people read these 3 books and truly understood how to effectively utilize them in their lives we could begin to get rid of poverty. Think about it...how many people do you know who identify themselves by their struggle, their job loss, sickness, The "Man"? How many times have we helped these people just for them to repeat the same negative unproductive behavior. There is a reason some people are in the situations they are in and it doesn't have anything to do with money, education, or opportunities. Take it from me, I used to try to save everyone until I realized not everyone wants to be saved.

Tabula Rasa Latin for "Blank Slate"
Today's Latin word or phrase for the day is Tabula Rasa or Blank Slate.
I am finding the Latin language to be very powerful. It is sometimes called a dead language because very few people in the world continue to speak it. It is also the language of spells and witch craft (If you're in to that sort of thing).
For me, I'm just fascinated by it. In case you haven't caught on my logo and the name for my blog posts was chosen because of what it means in Latin. "Tempus Neminem Manet " Time Waits for No One". This is how I live and this is how we should all live our lives. Not wasting time or taking things for granted but rather waking up everyday fresh ready to take on the world.
Let's say each day is an opportunity a "Blank Slate" if you will, our own personal Tabula Rasa. It is not to be squandered or taken lightly. Brush off all the yesterdays and look to the future, we can't change our past but we sure can learn from it.
