In a recent conversation with a friend we were discussing the economy and the minimum wage. The conversation was about the benefits pro and against raising the minimum wage. It started when someone was on the news talking about how they have been working for McDonald's for over seven years without a raise. WHAT! Who does that? Why wouldn't you just find a better paying job then quit?
On one side minimum wage should be just that. It should be the job you take on the way to the next job where you earn more than the minimum wage. In my opinion jobs in the fast food industry, sales, retail, are not meant to build your life or raise a family unless you are in the manager in training program and/or plan to be store owner or general manager.
There are those that feel that the minimum wage should be a lot higher because people can't live off what they make now. My rebutle to that is "Why are you trying? Take the job for as long as you need to get more education, finish school etc. Then move to the next phase of your life and career.
Let's say for an instant that school just wasn't your thing or maybe you were not in a position to get an education. So what do you do now? For starters don't give up. There are other ways to get ahead. Find ways to improve your life without settling for minimum wage.
They call it a "Minimum Wage" for a reason. If a person wants to earn more money working at McDonalds then go through their Manager training programs or if that's not enough go through their Franchise Ownership Program. But don't just sit back for 7 years and complain about your wages when you have made no effort to better yourself.
Okay stepping down off my soap box.
