Bring back "self assessments". I am getting tired of seeing people in jobs that they are clearly not cut out for. This society has gotten too weak. We let people work in areas and industries that are far beyond their capacity because we are "afraid" as a culture to tell them that they "Suck" at their job.
Human Resources dictates that we give them a chance and create the positive work environment. Are you kidding me? Positive Work Environment my A*%.
Can you do the job? If not, why are you here? Is it to make the rest of us suffer because of your incompetence? Or is it because you are living in the make believe world that tells you that you are doing a great job and it's the rest of us that are Crazy?
I think HR has it wrong. If within the first 90 - Days if you cannot do your job to the point where everyone around you has to pick up the slack then I ask you....Why are you here? So tired of being the only capable person in the room.
Self Assessments are not an exact science by no means, but at least they get the individual thinking about their own strengths and weaknesses. It is better to perform a job that you are actually good at and one where you are happy than to struggle at something you cannot do and are miserable doing it. Or just make everyone around you miserable!!
So here is my solution:
During the interview don't just talk about what you might be doing in a "scenario" actually explain the job and give real situations.
Some jobs require a certain amount of work experience in order to effectively do the job. If your industry is one of them, make sure you screen appropriately.
Have the candidate meet / interview with all members of the team.
Don't hire while the company is desperate. It is better to be short staffed with a good team that works together than to hire someone just to fill a void. This person tends to be the weakest link and will end up dismantling the culture and the vibe of the existing team.
Promote within if possible. Money and time will be spent no matter what. If someone within the company can be trained to do the job then this may be the best solution. Hiring outside the company does not always guarantee a better quality candidate or that the company's needs will be met.
Lastly, if you find that a mistake in hiring has been made, please correct the problem as soon as possible. The longer the person stays the more damage is done to the team and the company.
